What is RIGLOO?

RIGLOO is a lightweight, inflatable medical shelter designed for emergency medical services, fire departments, emergency physicians, disaster response teams, the military, security organizations, and event services. It was developed to protect patients and first responders from the elements—including cold, wind, rain, snow, and dirt—as well as from prying eyes, right at the scene of the incident.

The name RIGLOO stands for “Rescue Igloo”—a protective shelter for rescue operations. The system is compact, portable, and ready for use in a matter of moments. It can be positioned over a patient and the responding emergency personnel without having to move the patient. This is particularly important in cases of trauma, spinal injuries, severe accidents, or critical medical conditions.

RIGLOO is therefore not an ordinary tent, but a mobile patient protection tent for pre-hospital care. In just a few moments, it creates a protected space where medical procedures can be performed more safely, discreetly, and with greater focus.

What is RIGLOO used for?

RIGLOO is designed to protect patients during initial care at the scene and to provide emergency responders with better working conditions. In many emergency situations, medical care takes place outdoors: on streets, sports fields, construction sites, in forests, in the snow, at events, or following traffic accidents. There, patients are often exposed to wind, rain, cold, heat, dust, and the gaze of bystanders.

RIGLOO creates a mobile shelter directly over the patient. This improves privacy, reduces heat loss, and allows medical procedures to be performed in a more controlled environment. Typical uses of RIGLOO include:

Why is a medical shelter tent important?

In serious accidents or medical emergencies, every minute counts. At the same time, patients often need to be stabilized before they can be transported. It is precisely during this phase that they are particularly vulnerable: they may be lying on the street, in a field, in the snow, on a sports field, or in a public place.

Without protection, patients are exposed to the cold, rain, wind, and the gaze of passersby. This can be not only uncomfortable but also medically problematic. Maintaining body temperature is crucial, especially for trauma patients, unconscious individuals, children, the elderly, or hypothermic patients.

RIGLOO helps bridge this critical gap. It creates a protected space without requiring the patient to be moved. This allows emergency responders to act more quickly while better safeguarding the patient’s dignity and safety.

How does RIGLOO work?

RIGLOO is based on an inflatable structure. The tent is transported to the scene, unfolded, and placed over the patient or the treatment area. The design is intended to be ready for use quickly and without complicated setup.

A key feature is the so-called P.O.P.S. structure. The acronym stands for “Place / Over / Patient / Structure.” This means: The protective tent is positioned directly over the patient and the first responder without the patient having to be moved. This is particularly important in cases of:

Suspected spinal injuries

Trapped or immobile patients
Medical stabilization prior to transport
Situations where any movement should be avoided

Typical procedure:

Remove RIGLOO from the transport container
Unfold and prepare the tent

RIGLOO Rescuer Orange
The RIGLOO Rescuer Orange is the high-visibility variant designed for civilian rescue operations. Its striking color ensures that the protective tent is quickly spotted on roads, at accident sites, on sports fields, at events, and in urban settings. This variant is particularly suitable for emergency medical services, fire departments, emergency physicians, medical services, event services, and disaster response. It is ideal when visibility, quick orientation, and additional safety at the scene are important.
RIGLOO Defender Woodland
The RIGLOO Defender Woodland was developed for rural, forested, and tactical environments. The camouflage pattern blends better into natural environments and is particularly suitable for military, police, or tactical applications. This variant can be used during off-road operations, exercises, in forested areas, for tactical medicine, or in areas where a more inconspicuous design is desired.
RIGLOO Defender Tundra
The RIGLOO Defender Tundra is designed for snowy, open, or light-colored environments. The low-profile design is particularly suitable for winter operations, alpine rescue, mountainous terrain, military applications, and operations in snow-covered terrain. This variant offers the same protection as other RIGLOO models but is visually adapted to light-colored operational environments.
