LithiumBlack – High-performance molecular fire protection and extinguishing agents for lithium fires

What is LithiumBlack?

LithiumBlack is a specialized fire extinguishing and response product from FireLab designed for fires and critical incidents involving lithium-ion batteries. The product was developed to assist fire departments, plant fire brigades, industrial companies, logistics firms, workshops, and safety officers in controlling battery fires.

Lithium-ion batteries are found in many areas today: in e-bikes, e-scooters, power tools, laptops, smartphones, drones, vehicles, energy storage systems, and industrial battery systems. As these batteries become more widespread, the importance of appropriate fire protection and suppression strategies also increases.

Fires involving lithium-ion batteries differ significantly from conventional fires. If individual cells overheat, become damaged, or react due to technical defects, this can lead to intense heat generation, flame formation, toxic smoke, and a chain reaction within the battery pack. This process is known as thermal runaway.

LithiumBlack helps emergency responders better control such fire incidents. The product helps cool affected batteries, contain flames, reduce smoke and vapor generation, and slow the spread of the fire.

What is LithiumBlack used for?

LithiumBlack is used to combat, contain, and control fires involving lithium-ion batteries. The goal is to cool the source of the fire, reduce the intensity of the fire, and minimize the risk of reignition.

In battery fires, brief extinguishing is often insufficient. Even when no flames are visible, individual cells may continue to react or reignite. Therefore, intensive cooling is particularly important. LithiumBlack helps absorb heat, wet surfaces, and cool the battery or affected object for a longer period. Typical applications of LithiumBlack include:

  • Fire suppression for lithium-ion batteries
  • Cooling of overheated battery packs
  • Containment of thermal runaway
  • Reducing reignition
  • Limiting fire spread
  • Protecting adjacent objects
  • Supporting fire departments and plant fire brigades
  • Securing storage and transport areas
  • Fighting fires in e-bikes, e-scooters, and power tool batteries
  • Assisting with fires in energy storage systems and battery containers
  • Supplementing existing fire safety concepts

Why are lithium-ion battery fires particularly challenging?

Lithium-ion batteries store a great deal of energy in a small space. If a cell is mechanically damaged, electrically overloaded, overcharged, deeply discharged, or exposed to intense heat, it can become unstable. This can cause a rise in temperature that spreads to other cells in the battery pack.

The particular challenge lies in the fact that the fire often does not occur solely on the surface. The reaction can continue inside the battery. This generates high temperatures, dense smoke, flammable gases, and toxic decomposition products. Even after the fire appears to have been extinguished, a battery can reheat and reignite.

That is why fire departments and safety officials need appropriate equipment to not only fight battery fires on the surface but also to cool them as intensively as possible, contain them, and control them over an extended period.

How does LithiumBlack work?

LithiumBlack works primarily by cooling, wetting, and shielding. The extinguishing agent is applied to the source of the fire or the affected battery. It spreads across the surface, adheres better than plain water, and can help absorb heat from the fire area.

Depending on the application, LithiumBlack can improve surface wetting. This allows the extinguishing agent to adhere better to affected areas and penetrate into gaps, housing openings, or hard-to-reach areas. This is particularly valuable in battery fires because heat and reactions often occur inside the battery pack.

At the same time, LithiumBlack can help form a protective layer on the affected area. This aids in fire control, reduces the oxygen supply at the surface, and helps better manage heat and fire gases. However, LithiumBlack does not replace monitoring during operations: affected batteries must continue to be monitored, cooled, and stored safely after extinguishing. Typical procedure:

  1. Secure the hazard area
  2. Use personal protective equipment and respiratory protection
  3. Assess the fire or overheated battery from a safe distance
  4. Apply LithiumBlack precisely
  5. Intensively cool the battery and surrounding area
  6. Monitor for reignition and temperature development
  7. Move the battery to a safe area or secure it
  8. Ensure follow-up inspection and proper storage

Advantages of LithiumBlack

  • Strong cooling effect
Cooling is crucial in lithium-ion battery fires. LithiumBlack can help absorb heat and keep the fire source wet for longer. This lowers the temperature and reduces the risk of further cell reactions.
  • Better wetting
Compared to plain water, LithiumBlack wets surfaces more effectively. This allows the extinguishing agent to adhere to the affected area longer and act more precisely.
  • Prevention of reignition
Lithium-ion batteries can reignite after the initial extinguishing effort. Through prolonged cooling and better wetting, LithiumBlack can reduce the risk of reignition. However, a follow-up inspection remains necessary.
  • Rapid Deployment
LithiumBlack can be quickly deployed in portable or mobile extinguishing systems. This is particularly important in workshops, warehouses, loading areas, industrial facilities, or during firefighting operations when a rapid initial response is required.
  • Versatile Application
LithiumBlack can assist with many types of batteries and application scenarios: from small device batteries and e-bike batteries to larger battery systems in industry, logistics, and energy supply.
  • Protection of adjacent areas
Through rapid fire control and cooling, neighboring objects can be better protected. This is particularly important in warehouses, workshops, vehicle depots, garages, and technical facilities.
  • Support for professional response strategies
LithiumBlack can be integrated into existing fire safety and response strategies. It complements organizational measures such as safe storage, charging monitoring, temperature control, fire-resistant cabinets, quarantine areas, and staff training.

Typical Applications

  • Fire Departments and Plant Fire Departments
Fire departments are encountering lithium-ion batteries more and more frequently: in vehicles, homes, garages, businesses, e-bikes, power tools, drones, and energy storage systems. LithiumBlack can help emergency responders fight such fires more effectively and cool affected batteries.
  • E-bike and e-scooter sectors
E-bike and e-scooter batteries are frequently charged, transported, and stored. In retail spaces, workshops, rental stations, hotels, garages, or storage rooms, a suitable extinguishing agent can help reduce risk.
  • Workshops and industrial facilities
Battery-powered tools, machines, measuring devices, and vehicles are part of everyday life in many businesses. LithiumBlack is suitable for areas where batteries are charged, repaired, tested, or stored.
  • Logistics and warehouses
In logistics centers, many batteries may be transported or stored simultaneously. Rapid fire containment is particularly important here to reduce fire spread, property damage, and operational disruptions.
  • Battery test benches and laboratories
In development, testing, and research areas, batteries are subjected to specific loads, tested, or analyzed. This poses an increased risk of overheating or cell failure. LithiumBlack can be an important component of the safety concept in these settings.
  • Recycling facilities
When recycling electronic devices and batteries, damaged or incorrectly sorted batteries can cause fires. LithiumBlack can help control fire incidents more quickly and contain their spread.
  • Energy storage and battery systems
Stationary battery storage systems, emergency power systems, and industrial energy storage systems contain large amounts of electrical energy. LithiumBlack can be part of a comprehensive fire safety concept to better manage fire incidents.
  • Public facilities and businesses
Schools, government offices, hotels, office buildings, parking garages, and public facilities are increasingly using battery-powered devices and charging infrastructure. Appropriate fire suppression equipment can help mitigate risks early on.

Who is LithiumBlack designed for?

LithiumBlack is designed for organizations and companies that work with lithium-ion batteries, store them, charge them, transport them, or encounter them in use. These include:

  • Fire departments
  • Plant fire departments
  • Industrial companies
  • Logistics companies
  • E-bike and e-scooter dealers
  • Repair shops
  • Battery manufacturers
  • Battery testing laboratories
  • Recycling facilities
  • Energy suppliers
  • Operators of battery storage systems
  • Public institutions
  • Hotels and underground parking garage operators
  • Vehicle operators
  • Safety and fire protection officers
  • Disaster response and civil defense

LithiumBlack is particularly suitable for areas where there are many batteries or where batteries are regularly charged, tested, stored, or transported.

Difference from Conventional Fire Suppressants

Traditional fire suppressants such as water, dry chemical, CO₂, or standard foam can be effective for many types of fires. However, when it comes to lithium-ion batteries, their effectiveness is often insufficient to permanently control the internal heat generation, depending on the situation. The problem lies not only in visible flames but also in the reaction taking place inside the cells.

LithiumBlack is designed to provide more targeted support for cooling, wetting, and fire control. While powder primarily suppresses flames and CO₂ displaces oxygen, long-lasting cooling is the primary focus in battery fires.

Key differences include:

  • better wetting of the affected area
  • longer adhesion to surfaces
  • greater support for cooling
  • suitable for post-cooling and fire control
  • better containment of battery fire incidents
  • practical for fire departments, industry, and warehouse areas
  • supplement to existing fire safety concepts

LithiumBlack does not replace a risk assessment or professional operational planning. It is an important tool but must be used in conjunction with appropriate equipment, training, and safety protocols.
